Artificial Immersion and Language Acquisition
It takes thousands of hours of study to become even marginally fluent in another language. The best and fastest way to achieve fluency is to move to a country where they speak the language you want to learn. Uprooting your life and transporting it thousands of miles away from friends, family and employment is a big leap, and most people don’t want to take it blind. Thankfully there are other ways.
The best way to learn a new language without leaving your own country is through a technique called Artificial Immersion. In Artificial Immersion the student surrounds themselves, as much as possible, with input in the target language. This means that if you want to learn English for example, you listen to English language radio broadcasts; watch T.V., movies, and plays in English; you read English language newspapers, magazines, books, and comics; and you seize every opportunity to practice speaking in English. The most important thing is that you do this every day as many times as you possibly can until you are so full of the language that you start to think in it rather than translating from your native tongue. When you start to dream in your target language you’ll know you’ve succeeded.
